In 2015, 1787 brain cancers were diagnosed in Australia. The risk of being diagnosed with a brain cancer by age 85 is 1 in 103 for men and 1 in 161 for women. In 2016, there were 1439 deaths in Australia caused by brain cancer. The five year survival rate for brain cancer is 22%.
Brain cancer accounted for 1.5 per cent of new cancer cases in 2011. The risk of developing brain cancer increases with age and the average age of diagnosis is 58.7 years. The five-year relative survival for people diagnosed with brain cancers in Australia is 21.6 per cent.
Cancer Australia was established by the Australian Government in 2006 to benefit all Australians affected by cancer, and their families and carers. Cancer Australia aims to reduce the impact of cancer, address disparities and improve outcomes for people affected by cancer by leading and coordinating national, evidence-based interventions across the continuum of care.

Brain Cancer can be treated with surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or steroid therapy, or a combination of these treatments. The type of treatment will depend on several factors including the stage of the disease, the severity of symptoms and the general health of the patient.
The symptoms of brain cancer depend on the type of brain cancer, its size and where it is located in the brain. Common symptoms of brain cancer include headaches, seizures, nausea and vomiting. Depending on the part of the brain affected, people with brain cancer may also experience changes in speech, vision, hearing, balance, memory, mood, muscle tone or sensation.

Brain cancer is divided into four progressive and overlapping stages. Stage 1 is the least malignant stage of development: Cancer cells multiply slowly. Stage 2 is marked by the slow growth of cancer cells, which may spread into neighboring cells and develop into a higher stage of tumor that is more aggressive; still, they are treatable.
What is brain cancer? A brain cancer diagnosis is a diagnosis of a grade 3 or 4 brain tumour. These are tumours where the tumour cells grow more rapidly and are more likely to spread within the brain.
